Have your say on Social Media bans:  A competition for young people in the North East of England

Young people are at the centre of global debates about banning or restricting social media for under 16s. But too often, these conversations happen about young people, but not with them.

This is a chance to have your say.

The Challenge:
Create a digital artefact that shares your perspective on social media bans or restrictions for young people.

A smartphone screen displaying popular social media applications like Instagram and Twitter.

Your entry must be:

  • Fact-based: grounded in evidence, research, or credible sources
  • Thoughtful: showing reflection, nuance, or critical thinking
  • Respectful: engaging constructively with the debate, even if you strongly disagree

What can you create?

  • A meme
  • A cartoon strip
  • A short (up to 1 minute) video (spoken, animated, documentary, or creative)
  • An infographic
  • Any other original digital format

The artefact should be accompanied by a short explanatory narrative (max .200 words).

While creativity is encouraged, clarity and credibility of the message are valued just as much.

Deadline: 12 March 2026

Submit your entry here.

Please note that permission from a parent or guardian is required to enter the competition.

This competition has received ethical approval from Durham University. If you require further information please contact us.
